Trash and recycling collection services are provided via through contract by some incorporated towns and homeowners associations and by arranging directly with one of the many private, permitted waste collection companies serving the County. For a list of companies check out the County Web site at and search “haulers” or look in the yellow pages under “garbage removal.” Prince William residents are required to recycle:

  • Newspapers, magazines and mixed paper – no plastic bags
  • Glass bottles and jars – rinse and discard lids
  • Plastic bottles – rinse and discard caps. Sorry no tubs or other types of plastic.
  • Aluminum and steel food and beverage cans – rinse and discard lids

Residents may arrange with a private waste collector to pick up recyclable materials, or may drop off the recyclables at any of 18 drop-off sites located throughout the County. County Refuse Code requires private waste haulers to collect recycling. Corrugated cardboard, white paper, scrap metal, motor oil and anti-freeze may be recycled at the Landfill and Balls Ford Road sites only. Auto batteries are accepted at the Landfill only.
