RE: RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE VIOLENT ACTS IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA ON AUGUST 12, 2017 & SUPPORTING THE RENAMING OF CONFEDERATE SYMBOLS IN PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY

 

WHEREAS, Prince William County has increasingly become one of the most diverse counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

 

WHEREAS, Prince William County has been designated as the first majority-minority county in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and

 

WHEREAS, this diversity should be both appreciated and celebrated; and

 

WHEREAS, the celebration of diversity should supersede race, gender, orientation, creed, religion, or party affiliation; and

 

WHEREAS, despite the diversity that marks the beauty of Prince William County, our streets are still marred by ugly reminders of individuals that opposed diversity;

 

WHEREAS, on August 12, 2017, confirmed members of the Alt-Right, Neo-Nazis and White Nationalist movement gathered in Charlottesville, Virginia and the act of one individual associated with this protest caused the tragic and unnecessary death of counter-protester Heather Heyer;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Prince William Board of County Supervisors does hereby reject and condemn the behavior of the Alt-Right, Neo-Nazis and White Nationalist movement; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Prince William Board of County Supervisors does hereby support the renaming of Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge to a name to be determined by the Virginia General Assembly and recommends that it be included in the 2018 Legislative Agenda; and

 

BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that the Prince William Board of County Supervisor does hereby recommend that the Fire and Rescue Association consider renaming the Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire & Rescue house in Manassas; and

 

BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that the Prince William Board of County Supervisors does hereby recommend to members of the Prince William County School Board that they consider changing the name of Stonewell Jackson High School in Manassas.
