A new extension to the Virginia Railway Express commuter train line isn’t likely to bring more trains speeding into western Prince William County anytime soon…

In a presentation to the Prince William County Board of Supervisors Oct. 18, VRE’s Christine Hoeffner said extending the rail line 11 miles west into Haymarket is projected to cost about $660 million while only adding about 6,240 daily riders by 2040…

Hoeffner said the VRE would need a recommendation from the Prince William Board of Supervisors by December for consideration by the VRE Operations Board.

The high cost of expanding the rail line was enough to give the supervisors pause.

“Obviously, I think a concern that this entire board has had has been [that] they’re all great ideas, but we don’t have the money to do probably any of them,” said Supervisor Marty Nohe, R-Coles.

“If money was not an issue this would be a slam dunk,” said Supervisor Frank Principi, D-Woodbridge.
