Earlier this year, the Virginia legislature voted in favor of Medicaid expansion, which will enable more Virginians to access health coverage. This new coverage option begins January 1, 2019, and can benefit many of our neighbors, friends and family members who work in industries that traditionally do not offer health insurance–such as retail, construction, childcare, landscaping, food service.
Under the new guidelines, a single adult making at or below $16,750 annually may be eligible. A parent in a family of three with a household income at or below $28,700 may also qualify. An applicant must be 19 to 64 years old and cannot receive or be eligible for Medicare. Additional criteria apply.
The new coverage will include preventive care, doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital stays, mental health care and more. It will also include care coordination for individuals with complex medical and behavioral health conditions.
You can find more information about the new coverage for adults at www.coverva.org, which also has a screening tool and Frequently Asked Questions. Applications are not yet being accepted (get email updates from Cover Virginia). When enrollment begins, there will be several ways to apply:
