Christmas has come and gone, and it’s time to get rid of all that holiday greenery. But before kicking it to the curb, it still has another life left.

Live Christmas trees, wreaths and other cut greenery can be turned into compost, mulch or wildlife habitat. Birds like the greenery, said Leesylvania State Park Chief Ranger Maritza Rivas. “The trees themselves act like natural coverage, so it’s similar to bushes and trees. Birds really enjoy the evergreens.”

Trees and greenery will be accepted at the following locations:

  • The Prince William County Landfill at 14811 Dumfries Road in Manassas – Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed New Year’s Day. www.pwcgov.org/trashandrecycling
  • The Balls Ford Road Compost Facility at 13000 Balls Ford Road in Manassas – Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed New Year’s Day. www.pwcgov.org/trashandrecyclin
  • Leesylvania State Park at 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Drive in Woodbridge, off Neabsco Road – Trees may be dropped off at Shelter 2 and will be used for habitat

The drop off area is in the front parking lot in the area outlined with the orange safety cones. NOVEC will deliver the wood-chip mulch to interested customer-owners at no charge.
