Enthusiastic volunteers, all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, Omicron Chi Omega Chapter of Woodbridge, wrapped up their 2018 community service project at Marumsco Hills Elementary School in June. Their final evening of work included painting a map of the United States, hop scotch and other games, and the school’s logo on the sidewalk and pavement at the school, with the help of some of their children.

As they finished their project at Marumsco Hills Elementary, chapter members made good on their commitment to improve the environment at four Title I schools. The chapter has refreshed, restored, and renewed playgrounds at Dumfries, Occoquan, and Potomac View Elementary Schools over the last three years.

“I am so happy we are able to get this done,” said Brenda Johnson, committee chairman of the service project, as she pointed out the playground equipment and flower containers that sorority volunteers painted before the weather stopped their work in May. Swing sets and other features were rusted and unappealing, Johnson explained. Now, the candy cane-striped swing sets appear new and were in use the evening the sorority sisters were completing their project.

The fresh look impressed Marumsco Hills Elementary School parent, Huma Sahair, who came with her two children to see the progress being made by the more than two dozen volunteers.

“There will be more learning for the children,” said Sahair. “The U.S. map is colorful and cheerful; the children will have more fun,” she said.
