Northern Virginia Community College’s Woodbridge Campus will showcase its first art exhibit of the spring 2017 semester, You are in Control, with artist Heloisa Escudero. The exhibit will run through Feb. 10 in The New Gallery for Contemporary Art, 2645 College Drive in Woodbridge.

With an interest in conceptually-based art and human behavior, Escudero’s interactive drawings and performance installations initiate a reaction that provokes curiosity in what she describes as “an attempt to playfully investigate the viewer’s natural instincts of discovery.”

Escudero grew up in São Paulo, Brazil and holds American, Italian and Brazilian citizenships. She relocated to the United States in 1987, where her interest in fine arts developed. She obtained a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and a master of fine arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute. In 2007, Escudero moved to Sweden and worked as a full-time artist, creating four successful projects and exhibiting in Sweden as well as in Spain. During this time she conceptualized the BackPack Gallery Project, a collaborative project Escudero created with professional artists across the country. Participants outfit white wooden boxes with variations of their own work and wear the mobile gallery for viewers. For this collaboration, NOVA-Woodbridge Assistant Professor of Sculpture Zac Jackson associate professor of Art History, Gallery Director Erin Devine and Art Instructor Fred Markham created their own backpacks with paintings, sculptures and video. The BackPack Gallery Project is also shown in Escudero’s You are in Control exhibit.
