County Composting Day

April 28 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

The Prince William County Solid Waste Division will host its sixth annual Compost Awareness Day Event for area residents on Saturday, April 28 from 10:00 a. m. to 2:00 p. m. This year’s event will be held at a new location, the Sean T. Connaughton Community Plaza, located at 1 County Complex Court, Woodbridge.

The event supports International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), the largest most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. ICAW promotes composting efforts in the back yard and at large scale commercial composting facilities, like the County’s Balls Ford Road site.

To celebrate the good practice of recycling leaves, grass, and other organic waste, this year’s theme is “Building a Better Future”, because compost improves soil quality, promotes healthy plant growth, reduces the use of fertilizer and pesticides, improves water quality, and protects the environment. Composting is also an important way for residents to manage waste and extend the life of the landfill, since yard waste makes up 13% of the waste stream in Prince William County.

To provide a jumpstart for at home composting, volunteers from the Virginia Cooperative Extension will be holding workshops starting at 10:30 a. m., with topics ranging from container gardening, worm composting, and using compost for landscaping. As a regular attendee, Mary Lightfoot shares why she comes back each year: “I like the speakers because you can always learn something new. They make it interactive so you can learn from other people in the community as well.”

In addition to the workshops, early guests will receive a free compost sample. Compost bins and plants will be on sale, plus door prizes will be given out throughout the event. Residents are encouraged to bring yard waste such as leaves, logs, brush, and garden and hedge trimmings to be processed. The compost that is produced at Balls Ford Road can be purchased by the cubic yard at the Balls Ford facility or the County landfill and coupons will be distributed to the compost event attendees.

Composting helps grow healthy, quality food for your family, improves soil quality and landscapes, and has a positive impact for the environment in Prince William community. For more information visit pwcgov.org/trashandrecycling
