Supervisor Frank J. Principi To Introduce Resolution to Address Opioid Crisis in Prince William County

At today’s Prince William Board of County Supervisor’s meeting, Woodbridge Supervisor Frank J. Principi will be introducing a resolution to immediately invest $200,000 dollars to address existing unmet opioid treatment needs and reduce wait list lengths and times.

“Several weeks ago, we heard a very sobering presentation from County staff on the current opioid epidemic.  People are dying and I cannot sit idly by and not put forth the time, effort and attention that this situation demands,” said Supervisor Principi.

The new funding would be used to hire contractors to augment existing County staff, purchase medications and testing supplies and lay the groundwork for a more permanent solution in the Proposed FY19 Budget and the Five Year Plan.

Continued Supervisor Principi, “As I examined this issue in greater detail, I learned that we cannot eliminate the wait list length and time, which currently stands at about 70 people and a 3-month wait, with existing funding and that an immediate infusion of money would only address the situation temporarily.  When the new funding runs out, it’s anticipated that the wait list length would return to about 70 people and that’s not acceptable to me – and it shouldn’t be acceptable to any of my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors.  We need a permanent solution and that’s why my resolution also requests that County staff incorporate a proposal to eliminate all unmet needs as it pertains to opioid and opioid-related treatment into the Proposed FY19 Budget and Five Year Plan.

I want to thank the County staff that worked with me to develop this proposal and I am hopeful that my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors appreciate and understand how serious this issue is and how it is impacting families across Prince William County.”

The Board of County Supervisors meeting is scheduled to convene at 2pm, December 5, 2017 at One County Court Complex. Read more about the opioid crisis.
