Dogs and cats age four months or older must have current rabies vaccinations (Prince William Code, Chapter 4, Article IV and V). All dogs four months of age or older must be licensed each year by January 31. Animals are prohibited from running loose on public property and from trespassing on private property. Dogs are to be leashed when not on their owner’s property. Cruelty to animals is prohibited. It is against the law to keep vicious, wild or exotic animals as pets. The Animal Control Bureau must be notified whenever an animal bites a human. An animal that has bitten a human will be quarantined for 10 days for rabies observation. The Zoning Ordinance prohibits the keeping of wild animals and livestock on lots of less than two acres, and limits the number of dogs that may be kept on a lot based on property size.
